We are a Functional Medicine Practice, Using Natural, Holistic Treatments for Thyroid-Related Symptoms
Located in Fort Collins, Colorado, we welcome both local and distant patients throughout the U.S., by offering either in-office or telehealth appointments, with labs easily accessible to those in distant locations. For over 15 years, offering this convenient care has been life-changing for many. Detailed lab testing gives us clues about why there are chronic symptoms, and natural treatments are tailored for each unique person.
Functional Medicine is about listening to patients’ concerns and giving personalized care, with a goal of genuine recovery rather than endless treatment. Are you tired constantly, not sleeping well, gaining weight, losing hair, having stomach issues, feeling depressed and cold when others aren’t? Thyroid-related symptoms can be as varied as acid reflux, heavy periods and peripheral neuropathy. (See Thyroid-Related Problems.) There are at least 20 places in the body where thyroid dysfunction can be detected.
Also, many things—like cortisol (from stress) and inflammation—can block thyroid hormone from getting to thyroid-hormone receptors in tissues and being used, so measuring thyroid hormone in the blood and getting a normal lab-test result doesn’t mean someone is getting the benefit of that thyroid hormone. “I would go to doctors, but they had no answers. I struggled for 15 years with bloating, fatigue, weight gain, swelling and hair loss…before coming to Dr. Kajiki. After just one week of working with him, I felt so much better. . After 4 months…,the majority of my symptoms had improved.” * — Jamie
Functional Medicine: an Excellent Choice for Recovery
For thyroid medication to be useful, that hormone has to be “free” (not bound by too much thyroxine-binding globulin); it has to get to thyroid-hormone receptors in cells; and it has to be converted from T4 into the active form: T3.
Too much estrogen increases thyroxine-binding globulin, which limits free thyroxine (T4). Too much estrogen can also block thyroid hormone from getting to thyroid-hormone receptors in cells and benefiting body tissues.
Like estrogen, these things also block thyroid hormone from benefiting body tissues: inflammation (from hidden infections, poor blood-sugar control); toxins; cortisol from stress; and too much homocysteine (from too little B6, B12 or folate).
Functional Medicine looks for those “blockers” and for systemic triggers that overstimulate the immune system, like GI problems, anemia, food and chemical sensitivities, adrenal gland dysfunction, liver problems and hormonal imbalances. (See Thyroid-Related Problems.)
